School Profile
Talgarno Primary School is located on the shores of Lake Hume, 42 kilometres from Wodonga and serves the small rural community of Talgarno and Granya that include farming families, some 2nd and 3rd generation families, and others who commute daily to Albury/Wodonga for employment who have made lifestyle choices. A bus provides access for students to the school and additional bus funding provided by the school attracts some students from Bellbridge.
Demographics and Enrolments
The enrolment for 2006 was 21. Over the past three years the school enrolment has remained relatively stable ranging from 19 to 21 students, with slightly more girls than boys
Staffing and School Organisation
The school team consists of a Principal, a part time classroom teacher (0.6) and a business manager for two days each week. We employed an additional teacher for 1 day a week therefore providing the equivalent of 2 full time teachers for 4 days of the week and two class groups for these days.
Significant Features
The school places a strong emphasis on the partnership between the school and home in student learning. Every opportunity is accessed for further skills and programs from visiting and community groups. The school community “believes that every student can learn and has a right to achieve personal goals”. “The school is committed to provide the encouragement and opportunities that enhance learning, confidence and self esteem.” The school values its small caring environment which they believe caters for and nurtures each individual student.
Parents strongly support the school with practical hands on maintenance, special programs, reading activities and fund raising.
Community members provide donated calves and raise and sell the cattle with all proceeds going to the school. All households in the community receive the school newsletters and the school is utilized for community activities.
Other significant programs and resources include a comprehensive computer program, involvement in the local Landcare Group, visiting performances, the Mobile Library and Mobile Resource Centre visits ,established close links with cluster schools, cluster sporting programs and transition programs for Prep and Year 6 The Tallangatta cluster of schools nurtures strong relationships between the schools and also provides further opportunities for program enrichment
The school is a member of the Tallangatta/Corryong Innovations and Excellence cluster that includes a secondary college, a P-12 college and seven other primary schools. Key cluster programs have included The Arts, Science, teacher professional development, cooperation and performance development. Transition units, overnight camp, and a student passport program are an integral part of transition for Year 6 to 7 students.
